The College of Computer Studies (CCS), through the WECARE Office at Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, continues its commitment to community engagement with the successful completion of the second TechBeyondBars training session on March 26, 2025, held at the Computer Lab.
This session, titled "Designing with Purpose: Canva for BJMP Awareness and Reports," delivered practical digital skills to personnel from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Iligan City Jail, specifically focusing on enhancing their design capabilities for creating impactful awareness campaigns and informative reports.
This initiative addresses the need for enhanced digital literacy and design skills within the BJMP and contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
The workshop provided 18 Jail Personnel and Officers from BJMP Tipanoy, Iligan City, with hands-on Canva training. Participants, who attended the training in civilian attire, engaged in interactive sessions designed to equip them with the ability to create professional-quality designs for both awareness campaigns and reports. The training covered essential Canva functionalities, including template utilization, graphic element integration, text manipulation, and design customization, all aimed at fostering clear, concise, and visually appealing communication of information within the jail management system and to the wider community.
A key component of the workshop was a collaborative design exercise. Participants worked together to create sample materials, such as infographics and promotional visuals, representing various BJMP initiatives, records, and processes, including inmate programs, facility information, and public awareness campaigns. This practical application allowed them to directly translate their learning into tangible solutions relevant to their daily operations and community outreach efforts, promoting effective communication and information dissemination. By improving the design and accessibility of BJMP communications, the project indirectly supports stronger and more transparent institutions.
Asst. Profs. Paul B. Bokingkito Jr. and Jerina Jean Ecleo, faculty members of CCS, led and facilitated the training, providing expert guidance and support. Dedicated students– Louigi Lumongsod, Eslophel Gallardo, Ville Richard Pernia, and Clare Gepuela from the IT Department assisted them, offering valuable technical assistance and mentorship to the BJMP personnel.
TechBeyondBars: Digital Transformation of Jail Officers and Personnel, a yearlong community extension project spearheaded by CCS, exemplifies the college's dedication to digital empowerment and community development in the region.
The project is led by Alquine Roy Taculin, with a core team comprising Jennifer Joyce M. Montemayor, Liezil C. Daberao, Maria Fe P. Bahinting, Leah A. Alindayo, Paul B. Bokingkito Jr., Jerina Jean M. Ecleo, Nenen S. Borinaga, Michael Harvey M. Pagente, all representing diverse departments within CCS. This initiative, reflecting the WECARE Office's commitment, leverages the technological expertise of CCS to contribute to the advancement of local institutions and the enhancement of public service, ultimately working towards a more just and informed society.
